The Emm-Tech short course was created by Ross Emmett so that non-therapists would have the opportunity to use some of his work to help friends and family. Last year, Ross delivered his acclaimed presentation “Is What You Are Wearing Wearing You Out” in Belfast, and was very well received. Since then several Emm-Tech courses have been delivered in Belfast, and a Practitioner training programme has started.

Donal Campbell of Bowen Belfast, and Hilary Campbell-Martin of Manual Medicine will present an Emm-Tech course in two four-hour blocks on Sunday 29th January and Sunday 5th February in Belfast, where participants will learn many of the techniques Ross used in his demonstrations.

No prior experience is necessary, so the course can be taken by anyone.  It is of particular interest to Sports Coaches and Trainers, Carers for the Elderly, General Carers, and parents, or as a taster for therapists who may be considering taking the professional qualification.

The cost is £100, which includes your Course Guide, a Certificate of Attendance and a DVD for revision.

An eye-watering abstract of a study published in the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery describes how electroacupuncture can reduce the pain of rectal distension.

This is all well and good, no big revelation there – after all who doesn’t know that acupuncture can help relieve pain?

What troubles me is how the researchers got a study involving eliciting pain by inflating balloons inside people’s rectums past the ethics committee. Did the subjects know what they were volunteering for?

Maybe I’ve just led a sheltered life…
